The Russians - don't count them out just yet!

I just read on CNN that a Russian bomber plane buzzed a US aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Now, as a historian, I believe that we should never have counted those commie bastards out just yet. Consider the words of Dave Foley from the Kids in the Hall on this subject:

Let sleeping dogs lie. I say, NO! And you know what sleeping dogs I'm referring to, don't you? No? Well, let me refresh your memory. Russains! That's right, Russians, ruskies, communists, COMM-U-NISTS! Oh now you remember? Well, do you also remember how a few years ago all we ever talked about was how the Russians were gonna take over the world, and how every household would be run by communisis and their filthy communism.

Oh yeah, we feared the Russians back in them days, and for good reason too, but now all I ever hear is, "Poor little Russia, they've got no money!", "Poor little Russia, they've gone broke!" Poor little Russia THIS, and poor little Russia THAT! Don't you get it? Am I the only one who gets it? It's a trick. Communism never dies, communism is a cancer, a cancer sleeping, awaiting the moment to devour our freedom, to devour democracy.

There's one more thing I'd like to say. Killer bees! Forgot about them, didn't ya? Well that's just what they want us to do! That's right, the Russian communists, the killer bees, they're like this! (fingers crossed) So when people say to me let sleeping dogs lie, I say to them, friend, sleeping dogs...they eventually wake up...and chew out the throat of democracy! Don't you think I don't know what you're up to, Russia...

Yacht Rock - the reason for the internet!

While I can engage in music snobbery with the best of them, dropping Yo La Tengo and Joy Division references while I hold my nose at the regular pablum that constitutes modern radio, I have always had a soft spot (secret shame?) for the lighter end of the rock spectrum. Apparently, I am not alone, as I chanced upon a group of videos by a bunch of guys from California detailing the untold stories of the creation of what they term "yacht rock" - the Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers type of music that dominated the airwaves of the late seventies and early eighties. These videos are brilliant and provide a wonderful take on this hidden history that so clearly needed to be told. This is the first episode, entitled "What a Fool Believes;" hopefully you will tear up and laugh out loud at the same time, like I did. We should have done this kinda stuff with the GSHA...

Enjoy!

What's the story Wishbone?

What are this country's youth lacking? Is it leadership? Is it innovation? Is it tradition? Well, it's obvious: Wishbone! What better way to introduce the classics to kids than to have a loveable scamp of a dog wiggle his way into your heart with his portrayals of important literary figures? I saw an episode this weekend for the first time in years and thought "The genius of this! We should resurrect Wishbone and use him for the GSHA's nefarious purposes!" Maybe reenacted in the Russian Revolution? Wishbone as Mao? Incorporate him into the Kinderfuhrer concept? "C'mon, Wishbone!"

Enjoy!

Bring Back the Cold War!

The Chinese are sending us baby toys tainted with lead paint and tooth paste tainted with antifreeze. The Russians are trying to claim control of the North Pole. And, the North Koreans are up to their nuclear tricks, as usual. These dirty commies, despite their ten year gradual warming trend towards the US of A, still seem to have it out for us and our way of life. They freakin' sent us poisoned dog food, for goodness sake! So, I say, you try to take out our pets, you incur the wrath of an enraged democracy!

Likewise, without communists to kick around, what is James Bond, really? A British rough pretty boy with sadistic tendencies and an overall contempt for women. 007 and the Cold War go together like Bogie and Bacall, Torvill and Dean (who were robbed at Lillehammer), franks and beans, beer and lawn darts.

Aw, applesauce! Here's the Cold War Kids - dig on their music...

Enjoy!

Great idea for new TV series!

It is rare that I pat myself on the back for my own brilliance. Indeed, I'm usually suprised at how dense I can be. However, while avoiding doing my work for school, I had the most amazingly intense fit of creative juicing since I was first inclined to start this stupid blog. What I have imagined is a new sci-fi adventure series that combines The Prisoner with V: The Miniseries. This idea has limitless possibilities, especially if set in Knoxville, using the Sunsphere as the new command post for the new Village, whatever that might end up being (we need a good session at the Bean to work out all the details). Here's the brilliant part: the show could be titled All Your Base Are Belong To Us! I'm anxious to hear from all you out there in the webosphere what you think. I think I'm onto something really special...

some oldies but goodies that aren't hair bands...part 1

I've been listening to some of the music that I used to listen to a lot back when I had longer hair. Not as long as I recently had it, but longer than I have it now. Not that I am reluctant for helping little hairless children with my donation of hair. Nor am I having second thoughts about my new do. I've just been listening to some of my older music and thought I would pass along the hits of the eighties and nineties as thru the ears of me. Mind the wax!

In many ways, this song and this band made me into the person that I have become. I don't know why, but suffice it to say, I could handle only getting to listen to Camper Van Beethoven for the rest of my life, if I had to make a choice and I couldn't take my Who records with me. Or I couldn't watch the Lawrence Welk show on PBS. So, lay back, find some cowboys on acid, and drink in the CVB hipness!

No more horrid visions of things to come...why is that?

Seriously, why is it that they don't make good (or even bad) post-apocalyptic motion pictures anymore? Is it because we ain't still fighting the Russkies? Where are the Omega Man, Planet of the Apes (not Tim Burton's), or Soylent Green of our generation? Or Logan's Run or Clockwork Orange? Or even a good radiation-filled, happening film that examines man's inhumanity to man through the interplay of scantily clad nuclear holocaust amazons riding big motorbikes with razor sharp horns while they hunt down the scientist males who possess the unclean technology? That actually sounds like a promising film...

I suppose that the Mad Max films serve as a living bridge to the Heston armageddon series, albeit with a more nihilistic overtone than the 1970s films. But, even after having watched a few minutes of the first movie the other night on the late show, I believe that the original Mad Max was a kick-ass movie, kinda like Bullit in the outback after the breakdown of societal restraint and the rejection by law enforcement to actually obey the laws they enforce. And, yes, there were several approximations of this genre by other auteurs, all with screaming cars, buxom mohawked women, and angry anti-heros. But why not now?

Of course, the eighties and early nineties saw a raft of Blade Runner rip-offs which, even with bad movies like Johnny Mnemonic, had a certain appeal that frightened and delighted me at the same time. To be sure, Blade Runner as an action film is pretty boring. But, it is visually stunning, with its imagery of decay and modernity coupled together in such a way that is hard to soon forget, especially if you like seeing Rutger Hauer all slick and menacing (makes me want to wear my hair all spiked up).

Although, speaking of hair and my fear that I may now look like a reject from an eighties film, I think one of the most underrated post-apocalyptic movies from the eighties has to be Footloose. I mean, think about it - (1) stranger comes to repressive town that is isolated from the rest of the world (due to Reagan's foreign and domestic economic policies), (2) stranger has new paradigm for doing things in this repressive society (dance, dance, dance is the revolution solution), (3) stranger uses extra-ordinary physical prowess to enable him to function in a world ripped apart by divisive notions of the future and past ("You better run, city boy, cuz we're gonna mess you up!"), (4) stranger triumphs in such a way that the pyrrhic victory he has accomplished is meaningless and of little consequence ("Now we get to dance and shake our asses any time we damn well please!"). As you can see, Footloose is essentially Road Warrior in middle America. Except without cars. Or crossbow-toting maniacs. But, other than that, Footloose is a shot for shot homage!

So, what the GSHA needs to do is make a new post-apocalyptic film for the new millenium. Maybe even a series, like the Mad Max films, with opportunities for residual profits from toy and commemorative drink glass campaigns at the fast food franchises. The wheels in my head are spinning with ideas - all we need is a title. How about Gender and Power in Rural China: The Aftermath (happens to be the book I am reading right now, but I added the aftermath part)?

Don't know exactly what to make of this...

Who knew that communism was so psychedelic?
