Spam Cookoff Update

The first annual Spam Cookoff for the Arts and Sciences College has come and gone. While I was unsuccessful in attaining an award for my Spam Vindaloo (which is actually better with age, we discovered today), all of the recipes were quite good, despite all the preconceived notions of how Spam tastes. Chuck, incidentally, refused to participate and didn't even come in to sample the dishes, earning himself the coveted "Spam Punk" award in the Spammies. Travis Hardy, using the American Southwest as his inspiration, created a spicy Spam Hash that was quite yummy. The winner of the best in show Spammy was Megan Harris with her interesting Spam Cornbread casserole that was the hit of the event. Now that the buzz has died down and the Spam put away, we have decided to try something different for next month - maybe Ramon noodles or Cheese Whiz!

Dily Lama - an arresting update

After further investigation, I have discovered, and I am sad to report, that Dillard Clark has passed on to his final reward. I was unaware of this, having not visited with him for years. I was reminded that he used to tell me to keep my aftershave in the fridge to keep it potent. And, as my sister pointed out, he was a member of our church and contributed an original recipe to the church cookbook for cantaloupe pie. We have decided to make it, despite our hatred of cantaloupe, in honor of the man. I've included a video of the Beatles, Dillard's favorite band, here for all of us to remember him by as we get ready to make his unique pie. So, here's to you, Dillard, and hope you have found peace as much as you gave to others!

Cool videos of eighties geekdom (that I enjoyed and participated in)

Back in 1980, my father ordered an Apple II+ from CAlifornia. We thought we were riding the wave of the future, with our black and white screen, BASIC programming language, and tape recorder drive that never really worked. Thinking about this time, I decided to go out and look for fun stuff about our old computer. Here is a video on the first years of Apple. Is it just me, or does Steve Wozniak look like Eric Martin? Here's another video of a person using an old Apple to make a neat music video - I knew BASIC but could never do anything like this! And who can forget this game? Or these? (Here's one for those who had a TRS-80 or an Atari 2600).

As for other geeky pursuits, remember Dungeons and Dragons? Yes, I was one of those who played the game, painted lead figures, and drew pictures of elves and wizards. However, I never got to the point of doing this (although, I'll admit that I probably would have tried it given the opportunity). I miss these innocent pursuits, and wish that I had some of a similar vein with which to spend my time. The band idea is still a possibility - if only I could find like minded folks who are interested in making a huge, feedback drenched racket!
