I've been listening to a lot of soul, blues, and rhythm and blues these last few days. Many soul and R&B artists covered this song by the Bee Gees, such as this one:

Some of my most favoritist music that makes me happy

Yes, I know that this music isn't easy listening and, you may say, conventional. I also know it isn't good work music (despite the fact that I would listen to this stuff mowing lawns in my neighborhood for money when I was young). However, every now and then, I go back to King Crimson for some Veeb-ish excitement when needed, as well as fulfilling my need for hearing extrememly enviable musicianship from a freaky band. These videos are from the eighties version of the group, which is actually more concise and in your face than the earlier and bloated prog-rock path King Crimson took in the 1970s (as if you really cared). Be forewarned: THIS IS NOT your mama's Sunshine Pop! This is sunshine pop that has been knocked in the head with a bronze owl statue, run over and sucked up by a vacuum truck, spit out into a chemical factory sluice, and then tickled with a thistle bush during a 75 car pileup in a china doll outlet!

Sunshine Pop - a secret shame that freaks me out - part 3

My girl friend hates sunshine pop, which makes sense. After all, she lived through the era that it was most prevelant and, so, obviously stomached more sunshine pop than she ever planned on listening to during her formative years, especially when she actually likes music that is more real and substantive than the plasticity of sunshine pop. Myself on the other hand, being a bit younger, was rocked to sleep by the dulcet tones of this form of musical expression. I grew up for a long time thinking that this was the epitome of musical genius. And why wouldn't my parents have used this type of music to calm the savage beast that resided in me? It was benign, it was mostly upbeat, it was nearly always happy and melodious, and it was performed by men and women singing together in perfect three part harmony. So, it was the joyous true soundtrack of our lives for those of us who grew up in the seventies. But then the nightmares and the voices came...

This is a video of the pseudo-sunshine pop group The Seekers on their much discussed and controversial 1968 farewell tour. While they are more often thought of as a folk group, their sound definitely is that of sunshine pop. Makes a man all squishy inside! So, I dedicate this to Deb, despite the fact that it will probably make her puke blood having to listen to it! Enjoy!

Sunshine Pop - a secret shame that freaks me out - part 2

The thing about sunshine pop is that there is the sense that at any moment the syrupy goodness and ultrasweet poppiness will erupt into a full-tilt, full-on freak out fest that will drip with the bloody entrails of those unfortunate souls unlucky enough to be there for the apocalypse. This is one of those bands, made even scarier by the fact that they are dressed like hippy freaks with bad skin that escaped from a marching band. So, enjoy the Peppermint Trolley Company and sleep well tonight!

Sunshine Pop - a secret shame that freaks me out - part 1

This is the Free Design. They are a band from the sixties. I like them a lot. I like their song "Make the Madness Stop" and their song "Kites are Fun." Someday, when I grow up, I'm going to have a suit just like the guy on the right, as well as a vandyke beard with cool sideburns.

The Free Design make life a lot more colorful, with their cool harmonies and their technicolor music. They know about living with head injuries, even though they never ate fistfuls of STP-laiden sugarcubes.

These guys like the Free Design, too. I think they are okay, even though it's obvious that they were eating fistfuls of STP-laiden sugarcubes when they made this.
